Hey, I'm Beth. It's a long-time member's fault I am here.

Aspiring Librarian (got the degree) with dreams of being a travel writer. In love with Korea having just spent 5 months there, best irresponsible spending of money I have ever done.

I appreciate wit/snark (but not meanies), things that are purple, videos that look great on my cell phone, animated movies (yes anime, but mostly Pixar, Disney, etc.), and artsy music videos.

Someone figure out how to grow a money tree so I can travel Asia for the rest of my life. K? Thanks.

you were able to travel there without speaking Korean (if so, which cities did you visit?) or did you already know the language?

I stayed mostly in Seoul and was able to get by on the limited Korean vocabulary I knew (took lessons and learned a bit more while I was there). Seoul is quite English friendly, as is major cities or tourist areas (such as Busan), but I did travel to a couple areas where very little English was spoken and I was very limited in what I could do, or I traveled with Korean friends who helped me.

If you are planning on traveling there, I would suggest you learn basic Korean (such as "Thank you", "I'm sorry", "How much is it?", monetary values, etc. and basic Hangul) as well as how to use the the correct formality/speech levels. VERY IMPORTANT. As a foreigner you have a bit of leeway on the politeness stuff, but it goes a looooong way if you are trying to experience the culture and interact with people to the fullest. Showing respect for their language and culture is very important.
